October Market Update: Cider Season and Market Reasons

October 02, 2025

As the leaves turn and the air takes on that crisp fall feel, I am reminded that this season is all about change. Just as we trade beach days for apple picking and sweaters, the markets and economy often bring their own shifts, sometimes sudden and sometimes expected.

Recently, the government officially shut down after the October 1 deadline passed. While the headlines can feel unsettling, history shows these shutdowns tend to be shorter than a New England foliage season. Since the mid-1970s, the average shutdown has lasted just over a week. Even when political gridlock drags on, markets usually refocus on the real drivers such as corporate earnings, consumer spending, and business investment.

Part of what makes this shutdown tricky is the tug of war in Washington. Both sides are digging in on their priorities, which means the standoff could last a little longer than we would like. Democrats are pushing for more support on healthcare, while Republicans are focused on spending cuts and trimming certain programs. It is a bit like watching kids argue over who gets the last cider donut, and no one wants to give in. While the details may shift from year to year, the back and forth is a familiar part of the process.

That does not mean we will not see some bumps in the road. Sectors like defense and life sciences may feel a little turbulence, and some economic data could be delayed, much like waiting on a flight packed with leaf peepers heading to New England. In the bigger picture, however, the economy continues to show resilience. Strong earnings, steady consumer activity, and the Fed’s return to rate cuts all serve as supportive backdrops. Even if we experience a modest pullback in the stock market, the kind that is as normal as a fall rainstorm, it could create opportunities for long term investors.

So, as we sip cider and watch the foliage reach its peak, let us keep perspective. Just as the seasons turn, markets move through cycles, but with patience and discipline, the path forward often reveals more growth ahead.
